VOLTA RETURNS TO NEW YORK IN MAY 2022

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18 – SUNDAY, MAY 22 2022

“We put so much hard work and effort into VOLTA over the past two years. We’ve re-strategize and re-positioned, traveling to cities like Copenhagen, Vienna, Madrid, Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Mexico, New York, and Miami to cultivate new exhibitors, fresh talent, and wider constituencies. We’ve truly pushed the limits of what the past months made possible.

Our dedication to the fair is paying off. We are returning full speed with both of our fairs in New York and Basel this year. With a steady number of returning and established exhibitors from the early VOLTA days to a new group of young and emerging galleries, VOLTA Art Fair continues to be a place where you can discover artists and talent.”

VOLTA Art Fair Announces New Location at 548 West

VOLTA has announced its return to New York in a new location at 548 West, the former Dia building and Hauser & Wirth gallery space in Chelsea. Coinciding with Frieze New York, the fair will take place from Wednesday, May 18 to Sunday, May 22, and welcomes a vibrant cohort of over 50 national and international galleries, both new and returning to the New York edition.

The transition to its new location and the alignment with Frieze Week ushers a new chapter for VOLTA, which joined the Ramsay Fairs family in 2019 with a refreshed vision to reintroduce the fair as a global art destination for considered curation and creative discovery.

For its 2022 New York edition, VOLTA will host solo and group presentations from galleries in Beirut, Budapest, Calgary, Cologne, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Leipzig, London, Marbella, Nassau, New Orleans, New York, Santa Fe, Tokyo, and Vienna, among others.

Discover Exhibitors Making Their Debut

Leipzig-based She BAM! is an all-women gallery represented by the French gallerist Laetitia Gorsy. With a focus on women artists and their careers, the gallery presents a solo by Theresa Möller. While laying out her broad knowledge about flora on large canvas, Möller recreates a reverse process of our civilization by referring to the “Eden” of our genealogy: Nature.

Brooklyn-based The Empty Circle aims to give local and international emerging artists their first public exhibition opportunity in New York City. The gallery showcases a new series of works by member artist Claudia Doring Baez. These new paintings, inspired by Roland Barthes’ essays on photography, explore Barthes structuralist theories and apply them to painting.

Santa-Fe-based Kouri + Corrao Gallery will present a solo by Korean-American artist Jen Pack. Pack utilizes fabric and thread to construct art that is simultaneously architectural and whimsical. The artist challenges the viewer to reconsider the artistic products associated with traditional feminine craft while referencing masculine heritage. Kouri + Corrao Gallery will participate in the Venice Biennale 2022 at Palazzo Bembo via the European Cultural Center.

Over 30 Galleries Will Return to VOLTA New York from Prior Iterations

Vienna-based Galerie Ernst Hilger will present a solo by established artist Jakob Kirchmayr. The Austrian artist creates his works directly on the canvas, without preliminary sketches. His brushstrokes are filigree and expressive at the same time, creating a condensed atmosphere. The gallery presented Kirchmayr’s works art Art Cologne in 2021, as well as Spark Art Fair in Vienna, Art Paris, and Art Düsseldorf in 2022.

Budapest-based INDA Gallery promotes the oeuvres of established artists, and also of young talent as well as rediscovered masters, brought together by conceptual and aesthetic links in their practices. Living in different countries Zsofia Schweger (UK), Rita Suveges (Hungary), and Matthias van Arkel (Sweden) are related in their painterly responses to global issues of the day. INDA Gallery returns to VOLTA New York after its last participation in 2015.

Jersey City-based Jonathan LeVine Projects will present works by Kumkum Fernando, a Sri Lankan artist based in Vietnam. The artist’s ongoing “Reborn universe” project posits found-material sculptures harkening to stylized action figures, deities, or idols that evoke unique spiritualism and mythology inspired by traditions associated with ancient Sri Lankan visual culture. Jonathan LeVine Projects returns to VOLTA New York after their last participation in 2014.

- Based between Istanbul and Düsseldorf, Anna Laudel will present a selection of works by Ardan Özmenoglu, Mathias Hornung, and Sarp Kerem Yavuz, working across wood, glass, paper, digital media, and NFTs. This “media survey” seeks to explore the way in which the digital world complicates sensory perception and potentially confuses the handling of information.

HISTORY

VOLTA debuted in Basel in 2005 as an art fair collaboration between dealers and friends. The aim was to secure a platform for international galleries beyond young art fair Liste and market heavyweight Art Basel. VOLTA’s New York fair followed in 2008, offering a solo and boutique alternative to the crowded trade show tradition of Armory Week in March. Concerns and aspirations of the exhibiting galleries have been of the utmost importance since VOLTA’s inception, resulting in eclectic and dynamic solo presentations and multiple artists in curated conversations.

In autumn 2019, Ramsay Fairs acquired VOLTA, sparking fresh ideas for future editions. Under the new leadership of Kamiar Maleki and with editions in New York and Basel, VOLTA builds the foundation and platform for younger galleries to participate in the art markets’ major cities.

In 2022, VOLTA Art Fairs returns to New York during Frieze Week from May 18 to 22 at 548 West 22nd Street, the former Dia Building and Hauser & Wirth gallery space. Followed by the fair’s 17th Basel edition, returning to ELYS at Elsässerstrasse 215a in Basel, June 13 to 19.
